HOLSWORTHY AIRPORT PROPOSAL - ISSUES
ENVIRONMENTAL - FLORA/FAUNA/WILDLIFE
THE FACTS
Airport Construction: If the airport goes ahead at Holsworthy, creek valleys up to 110 meters deep will need to be filled in to create a platform approximately 12 kilometers square for runways and terminal facilities. The impact this will have on the environment and surrounding areas will be devastating. The O'Hares Creek system, which is listed on the Register of the National Estate, will either be severely incapacitated or disappear entirely.
The airport would be built to accommodate 80,000 vehicles coming and going from the terminal each day. Anti-Holsworthy MP Danna Vale said the proposed transport links would be just as damaging to the local environment as the airport itself.
The Holsworthy site comprises 20,000 hectares. This area comprises virgin bushland and waterway/creek access; boasts koala colonies; is the "lungs" of Southern Sydney. Large disease-free breeding grounds for koalas will be decimated.
The Holsworthy site is a major Aboriginal site (more shortly on this).
The Illawarra region, potentially affected by this proposal, comprises of virgin rainforest; pristine beaches; is a major paragliding site and a major tourist destination. Holsworthy proposal directly threatens the Illawarra region.
Aircraft departing and arriving at Holsworthy could "track" directly over Wollongong's water supply at Lake Woronora dam at a height of no more than 500 meters. This activity would severely pollute our drinking water.
A nuclear facility is located no more than 5 kilometers from the proposed site (more on this shortly).
